WHAT IS FIRE RETARDANT WOOD LIGTAN?

FR Wood LIGTAN is wood impregnated with fire retardant chemicals during manufacture that, when tested, has a flame spread index of 25 or less and no evidence of significant progressive combustion when the test is continued for an additional 20 minutes. In short, FR Wood LIGTAN does not support combustion and its burning rate is limited when flame is applied.

In addition, FR Wood LIGTAN is able to protect wood from mold & termites, structural degradation & thus prolonging its intended usefulness lifecycle.

HOW IS LIGTAN WOOD MADE?

Clean & dry softwood that has been graded to make sure it is of suitable appearance is impregnated with a fire retardant chemicals.  The untreated wood is loaded onto carts, which are moved into a specially made round cylinder, is sealed and a vacuum is applied to remove the air.

Next, the fire retardant chemical is pumped from storage tanks, completely filling the cylinder. Pressure is continuously applied within the cylinder to force the fire retardant into the cells of the wood.

Processing time depends on the wood species, the size of the products treated and the fire retardant used, as well as the standard for the intended exposure of the final product.

Finally, the fire retardant is drained from the cylinder, the carts are moved out from the cylinder.

Following the treating process, the products may be dried in a kiln or placed in an area with large fans to create air flow for fast drying the wood.

DOES USING LIGTAN WOOD HELP REDUCE INSURANCE COSTS?

Yes,

Using LIGTAN timber trusses, roofs and partitions instead of untreated wood, even where sprinklers are fitted, will help prevent fires, reducing fire insurance costs.

LIFE CYCLE COMPARISON OF UNTREATED WOOD VS. TREATED WOOD

Because treated wood is intended to extend the usefulness and life of wood, fewer trees are required to perform the same function that is required when untreated wood is used.

Wood that has been appropriately treated can significantly reduce the number of trees that would otherwise need to be harvested.

If untreated wood only lasts 5 years and treated wood lasts 25 years or more, it would take at least 5 times as many trees over the same period of time, as well as the incremental labor, to continually harvest, manufacture, replace and dispose of all of the untreated wood.

Unprotected wood can begin to rot within 1-2 years depending on the environment. The structural integrity of untreated wood can be greatly reduced within weeks due to termites.

Without chemical treatments, wood can be quickly consumed when exposed to flames.

CAN LIGTAN WOOD BE SCREWED, NAILED, GLUED AND PAINTED?

LIGNA Wood can be glued and painted in the same way as other timbers.
